A Chinese manufacturer of major home appliances was bought out by a large American Conglomerate. In order to gain a competitive advantage over other manufacturers, the Marketing department saw an opportunity to design and manufacture an entirely new kitchen appliance. It was imperative this new appliance got to market quickly.

The Marketing department believes that they have just 18 months before their off shore competition will have a similar product available at a lower cost on the market. When the design engineer were asked to design and get the product into production within 18 months they said,

It is impossible – we have never brought a new product from concept to market in less than 3 years! It can’t be done!

Executive and team coaching bring the marketing department and the design engineers together to clarify the uncertainty, facilitate and support the new ways of thinking, create one high performing team. The group designs the “New Dynasty” project where performance promises are based on the future the group is committed to, not on the history of product development. The result is the new product was brought to market in a record-breaking 13 months.

Is it possible to change mindset?

It is saying,

In China, everything is possible but nothing is easy.

It is so true. People always want to express a modern, global mind-set and be part of the international community. But sometimes they remain firmly grounded in many of the Confucian traditions and beliefs that have shaped China’s culture over thousands of years. E.g. “it is not accept by our tradition”, “Playfulness is only for children”, “Fantasies or dreams are for non-practical people”. Although many young Chinese generations are openness and acceptance to new thinking; there are many other groups of people who still carry “impossible”, “can’t do” attitudes.

Possible and Impossible Thinking

Possible thinking is an attitude. It allows people to open up for new opportunity, to explore any possibilities, to learn new ways to thinking, to act on new desires, to change their life positively.

Impossible thinking is a “can’t do” attitude. When people tend to have impossible thinking, there is an internal conflict caused by other voices in mind that tell them what they should not do it.

What is Possible?

“Possibility,” according to Webster’s Dictionary, is defined as “that which is possible; a thing which may possibly happen, be or exist.” (2)

The coach’s task is to create “possibility” or, even, multiple possibilities for clients. Often such possibilities involve taking a client into the unknown or to a place they would never go alone.

What is Impossible?

Impossible means it is not able to occur, exist or done. It is not possible; incapable of being done, of existing, etc. (2); unattainable in the nature of things, or by means at command; insuperably difficult under the circumstances; absurd or impracticable; not feasible.

The coach’s task is to clarify and eliminated the underlying beliefs that block the “possibility” or, impossible to possible for the clients.

The Power of Mindset

“Whether you think that you can, or that you can’t, you are usually right.” Henry Ford. Ford was an intelligent man, he believed he could invent the car and he did. For the last 100 years we are using his invention to our benefits.

Anything is possible. A “can-do attitude is key success factor. Even the Good old Book said it right that all things are possible to him that believes (Mark 6:13). Thus, it is crucial to change the mindset about a lot of things and issues which have become conventional, that is, the status quo. Therefore, to embrace the ‘can-do’ attitude is beneficial to individual and organization success.

It is powerful if we think possibility instead of impossibility. For therein is magic. The magic is happening when we behold a possible attitude. Things are created twice, first in the mind and secondly in the physical as the tangible outcomes. It works effectively if we believe it.

What we can or cannot do, what we consider possible or impossible, is rarely a function of our true capability. It is more likely a function of our beliefs about who we are Tony Robbins Quotes(1)

It was not long ago that people considered flying impossible. Yet today we regularly fly 100-ton aircraft full of 200 people or more. So what changed? What is regularly impossible in one perspective may be considered more than possible, in fact easy in another perspective. What changed is the perspective.

To change your life you must first change your thinking. There is no other way. We cannot change the environment so we only can change our perspective. The basis of any learning & development process is changing people’s minds about what is possible and impossible.
